Prince Harry breaks silence on reconciliation with Prince William: ‘Some people don’t want it to work out’

Prince Harry appeared to address his conflict with Prince William in a new interview on Tuesday.

The Duke of Sussex, 42, who is not believed to have spoken to his older brother in four years, told GQ’s weekly interview series One More Question that “some people don’t want it to work out“, appearing to refer to his estranged sibling.

However, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “It was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family. The comment was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way.”

Harry, who returned to Britain in August with his wife Meghan Markle and two children, said he wants to reconcile with his family. HELLO! previously revealed that the King has not met his youngest son since his return, though they are believed to have spoken on the phone.

Harry said: “For me, there’s enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives to continue with issues with family.”

He added: “Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out. With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”

The Duke continued to talk about how “sibling disagreements” and “broken relationships between kids and parents” are a “massively relatable issue”.

“As a 42-year-old man with two kids, a boy and a girl, you start to look back at your past and your parents as to what you have carried from them, what they’ve handed over to you, what you want to take on and what you don’t,” the Prince said.

The interview was recorded in late September and was released at the same time that the Prince and Princess of Wales joined King Charles and Queen Camilla to host the Sultan of Oman for a high-profile State Visit at Windsor Castle.

Harry’s latest bombshell interview

Harry spoke to GQ’s Zach Baron for a wide-ranging discussion including family relationships, grief, and his family life.

He explained that he and Meghan have a “different attitude” to living in England than they once did, saying: “Our attitude has changed. I think once you’ve been through it, once you’ve been able to talk about it and raise awareness to it, then people see it for what it is, which makes the environment slightly easier.”

The Duke said that some “necessary battles” have been fought, but now hopes to “draw a line” under the conflict, leaving it “behind us” for the “greater good”.

Asked if he thinks he could repair “this wound”, the Duke of Sussex replied: “Yeah of course, I think every wound… look, scars stick around forever but… what your perception is and what your mindset is to these things that have happened, certainly letting go of the past, that’s something that I would encourage everybody to do.”

It comes after the Duke discussed grief in a special episode of Masterclass earlier this month, for which he is believed to have been paid up to $100,000.

Harry spoke about how he coped after the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, in a 90-minute discussion with neuroscientist Dr Mary-Frances O’Connor.

Last week, the Sussexes stepped out in Nottingham for their first public outing since returning to the UK.

Prince Harry and Meghan took part in three quasi-royal-style engagements, despite King Charles’s insistence on their return that they are “private citizens”, not working royals.

Harry and William’s relationship now

The two brothers, who were once close, were last in the same room together at the funeral of their uncle, Lord Fellowes, in 2024.

However, they did not sit near one another and are not believed to have spoken. Prior to that, the brothers were pictured together at the funeral events for the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

While Harry reunited with his father in July at Highgrove House, there has been no such reunion so far with William.

Their relationship worsened after Harry and Meghan’s allegations about the royal family in a Netflix documentary and the duke’s bestselling autobiography Spare – both released in the months that followed the late Queen’s death and at the start of the King’s reign.

Harry claimed his “archnemesis” brother “Willy” physically attacked him and knocked him to the floor into a dog bowl in a row over Meghan’s alleged rude behaviour, and that the King put his own interests above Harry’s and was jealous of Meghan and Catherine.

Harry later accused the royal family of a “horrible reaction” on the day Queen Elizabeth II died, and said he was not invited on the plane taking his relatives to Balmoral to see her.

The Oman state visit is the first incoming state visit since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the UK, but Harry and Meghan, who are not working royals, do not take part in official royal engagements.
